Bengaluru rain: Weather body issues orange alert, schools closed

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Bengaluru on Monday, October 21, 2024. The district administration, in the wake of this, declared holiday for schools and anganwadi centres in the district, and a few companies have asked employees to work from home.
A few schools in the city will function with classes being held online.
There have been a few traffic disruptions reported in some parts of the city. No flooding has been reported so far, but if the rain continues, it might lead to flash floods in a few low-lying areas. Incessant rains in Bengaluru over the weekend brought life to a standstill in the city.
According to the ‘nowcast’ (a forecast that is valid for three hours) issued at 6 am by the Indian Meteorological Department’s Bengaluru centre, the city can expect moderate to heavy rain/thundershowers accompanied by lightning.
Isolated rainfall could be expected in various parts of Bengaluru Urban and Bengaluru Rural districts.
The latest IMD weather update reports that an upper cyclonic circulation is present over the southwest and west-central Bay of Bengal, near the northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh coasts. It extends up to 5.8 km above sea level and tilts southwestward.
As a result, isolated heavy rainfall is expected in Uttara Kannada and Udupi districts.
Many parts of North Interior Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka will experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers.
Bengaluru will likely have cloudy skies with light to moderate rain and thunderstorms.
Bengaluru experienced isolated thundershowers on Saturday and Sunday, causing flooding and traffic disruption across the city.
